Flat hair, fine hair and thinning hair are three different problems, and most of the products sold for one get bought for another. A volumising spray will not fix a widening part. A hair-loss serum will not give a blow-dry more lift. Knowing which problem you have is most of the work.
Someone with plenty of fine hair buys a "densifying" range expecting body, and someone noticing a real change in coverage reaches for a volume shampoo when an assessment would help more. This guide separates the three, gives you a practical self-check, and shows which products are built for which job. It is also the starting point for our series on fine, oily, flaky and heat-styled hair.
Fine Hair, Low Density and Thinning Are Different Problems
The vocabulary matters, because product labels use it loosely.
| Word | What it describes | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Fine | The diameter of each strand. Fine hair is narrow, not necessarily sparse. | Lift, or products that make each strand feel bigger |
| Low density | How many strands grow per area of scalp. You can have fine hair with high density, or coarse hair with low density. | Fullness through styling and cosmetic thickening |
| Thinning | A change over time: less coverage than you had, a wider part, a smaller ponytail. | An explanation first, then cosmetic help |
Fine strands and low density are usually your baseline. Thinning describes something happening to it. That is why they need different products, and why the third one needs more than a product.
A 30-Second Self-Check for Flat or Thinning Hair
Before buying anything, look at three things in good daylight, not bathroom light, which flatters nobody and exaggerates everything.
Your part and your ponytail. Compare photographs taken with similar lighting, parting and styling. A part that has stayed the same width, with hair that simply lies flat, points to a volume problem. A consistently smaller ponytail or a widening part is worth discussing with a dermatologist; the American Academy of Dermatology lists both among the early signs of female pattern hair loss.
The hairs you find. Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Look at what you find in your brush. Mostly full-length hairs point to shedding. Short, snapped pieces of uneven length point to breakage along the length, a different problem covered below. Treat it as a clue, not a diagnosis.
Fine but unchanged hair needs volume or thickening. Change in coverage needs the conversation in the thinning section. Many people find they have more than one, which is fine. Rank them, and buy for the one that bothers you most.

When You Need Volume: Lift, Not Fullness
Volume is about how hair stands off the scalp, not how much of it there is. Fine hair loses lift easily, especially when heavier products sit near the root. The fix is partly product and mostly technique.
Dry the root first. Rough-dry the root area before you touch the lengths, directing the airflow against the way your hair falls, then flip it back. Drying the root area first, against its usual fall, helps create lift where you want it.
Keep weight away from the root. Conditioner from the mid-lengths down. Concentrate root-lifting products near the scalp, and distribute an all-over volumising mousse through the areas where you need body, following that product's directions.
Then Cyprus happens. Wetting disrupts temporary bonds inside the hair, and drying reforms them in the styled shape. Humidity and sweat can soften that set again, which is why a Cyprus summer is hard on a blow-dry. Hard water adds another layer: mineral buildup leaves fine hair feeling coated and heavy, which our hard water guide covers in detail.
What we reach for: Kevin Murphy Body.Builder is a weightless spray mousse that builds body without crunch, and you control the result by how much you use. Redken Volume Injection Shampoo is a lightweight cleanser made for fine, flat or processed hair, with a matching conditioner in the Volume Injection range. For a finishing step, Neuma Neu Volume Styling Spray adds body and also carries heat protection, so one product covers two jobs. Browse the full Kevin Murphy Volume range.
When You Need Thickening: Fuller Strands
Thickening products work on the strand you already have, making it look or feel fuller. How they do it depends on the product: some leave particles on the hair shaft, some grip the fibres as you blow-dry, some add substance with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. The result is cosmetic. It changes how your hair looks and feels, not how many hairs grow.
That is not a lesser result. For fine hair with normal density, cosmetic thickening is exactly the right tool. Pick the format that fits your routine (a wash product, a leave-in or a styling product) and add a second only if the first is not enough. On fine hair, more product is rarely the answer.
Kevin Murphy Thickening. Plumping.Wash and Plumping.Rinse are a densifying shampoo and conditioner for fine and ageing hair. Full.Again is a thickening lotion with tiny rayon particles that adhere to the hair shaft, adding fullness to fine or thin hair.
ColorProof Biorepair Thicken. The Blow Dry Spray grips individual fibres as you dry, adds hold, and includes heat protection, which suits anyone who blow-dries daily. It also helps prolong the life of hair colour, a point worth having in Cyprus, where sun and water already work on colour.
Kérastase Densifique. Bain Densité and Densimorphose mousse use hyaluronic acid to give hair more substance and resilience. Kérastase positions the range for hair lacking density, so it sits on the line between thickening and thinning care.

When Hair Is Thinning: Cosmetic Coverage and Medical Assessment
If your self-check showed a real change, you may want your hair to look fuller this week, and you also need to understand why it is changing. Hair loss has many possible causes. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that effective treatments exist for many types, and that the sooner treatment begins, the better the outlook.
Start with the cause. In Cyprus, ask your personal doctor about referral to a GESY-contracted dermatologist. A dermatologist can assess the scalp and tell you what is happening. Excessive shedding after illness, stress or childbirth often settles on its own, according to the AAD. Female pattern hair loss can progress without treatment, so a widening part is worth that appointment. No shampoo, ours included, can make the diagnosis for you.
Meanwhile, cosmetic coverage is legitimate and it works. Nanogen keratin hair fibres carry a natural static charge and cling to your existing strands, filling in visible scalp in seconds. Choose the shade closest to your own. The Hair Fibre Locking Spray seals them with a hold Nanogen describes as surviving sweat, wind, rain and UV, which matters in a Cyprus summer. Fibres are temporary coverage: they sit on your existing hair and do not change it. Our Nanogen guide explains the full routine.
Some professional ranges are built around the scalp. L'Oréal Professionnel Aminexil Advanced serum is designed for weakened hair prone to falling, part of the Scalp Advanced range. It is cosmetic support for weakened hair. It cannot diagnose or treat the underlying cause of hair loss, so a persistent change in coverage still needs a medical assessment.
Breakage Can Look Like Thinning
Remember the short, snapped pieces. If most of what you find is short and snapped, your hair may not be thinning at the root at all. It is breaking along the length, and the ends get sparse and see-through while the root is fine.
The Cyprus climate is hard on the length. Long summers of UV, salt water and pool chlorine weaken the hair fibre, and colour or bleach on top makes it more fragile still. Hair that breaks at shoulder length can make a full head look thin.
Treat the lengths and the scalp as separate jobs. Breakage happens along the hair, so the first move is care applied where the hair is snapping: a conditioner after every wash and a leave-in or detangler, both of which the AAD says reduce breakage, plus less heat and gentler brushing. If the damage follows colour or lightening, bond-building treatments are designed for that chemical damage; our bond repair comparison sets out how K18, Olaplex, epres and Redken differ in how and where they are applied.
Scalp care has a different role. Kérastase positions Genesis Serum Anti-Chute Fortifiant as a daily scalp and hair serum for weakened hair that falls because it breaks during brushing. It complements care for the lengths; it does not replace it. The wider Genesis range follows the same logic.
Breakage and thinning can also happen together. If your self-check showed a change in coverage as well as snapped ends, follow the thinning section above too.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much daily shedding is normal?
The American Academy of Dermatology says shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. If you notice a marked or lasting increase, speak to a dermatologist rather than switching shampoos.
Do thickening products work on thinning hair?
They make the hair you have look and feel fuller, which helps with appearance. They do not change how many hairs grow, so they work best alongside, not instead of, an assessment of why the hair is thinning.
Is fine hair the same as thin hair?
No. Fine describes the width of each strand. Thin, or thinning, describes how much hair covers your scalp, or a change in it. You can have a lot of fine hair.
Are hair fibres permanent?
No. Keratin fibres are temporary coverage that sits on your existing hair. A locking spray holds them in place for the day, and Nanogen describes its hold as resisting sweat, wind, rain and UV.
When should I see a dermatologist about my hair?
If your part is widening, your ponytail is getting smaller, or you notice a marked or lasting increase in shedding. In Cyprus, ask your personal doctor about referral to a GESY-contracted dermatologist.
